Cougars Run Past Union

The CSU softball team knocked off Union on day three of the Cougar Classic.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team shut out Union University 6-0 on the final day of the 2022 Cougar Classic. The Cougars improve to 4-4 while the Bulldogs fall to 2-6.

After beating Union in a close 5-4 game Saturday night, Columbus State was eager to get the sweep of the Bulldogs in the tournament.

"Our offense made some in-game adjustments to the Union pitchers, which is something we have been working on," commented head coach Brad Huskisson. "We did a good job with adjusting to the wind and hitting hard ground balls and low line drives."

With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Kenzie Bayer ripped an RBI single through the right side to score Lindsey Patton.

The game remained at 1-0 entering the sixth until the Cougars rallied with two outs, scoring five more runs. With bases loaded, Patton hit an RBI single up the middle to plate Canady, who led off the inning with a single through the left side. After Patton, Bayer walked and picked up her second RBI of the game, scoring Hannah Rose Corbin.

It was Madeline Parker who had the big blow, picking up two RBIs with a hard single up the middle, plating Patton and Elston.

Kira Finkley came in to relieve starting pitcher Reese Taylor, looking to end the scoring inning. However, Paige Vincent had other plans. Vincent jacked an RBI single to left field to give the Cougars a 6-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

"Hannah Rose threw a very good game," said Huskisson. "Our defense did a great job with reading the windy fly balls."

Corbin pitched her third complete game of the season and improved to 4-1 inside the circle. She recorded nine strikeouts in her first shutout of the year.

The Cougars tallied seven hits with Canady, Elston, Harris, Patton, Bayer, Parker and Vincent collecting one each.
