COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team split with the University of West Alabama on Saturday at Cougar Field. The Cougars dropped game one of the doubleheader 5-4, but bounced back to win game two 1-0.
CSU improves to 7-8, while UWA falls to 7-9.
Game 1: UWA 5-4
West Alabama came out strong in the top of the second with a two-run home run by LP Trammell to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead over CSU. The Cougars earned one run back in the next half inning thanks to a solo home run by senior
Morgan Elston.
The Tigers then capitalized off of an outfield defensive error, scoring three runs to give West Alabama a comfortable 5-1 lead in the fourth.
CSU did not give up though as the Cougars scored one run in the bottom of the fourth, fifth and seventh, but couldn't plate the tying run. With the bases loaded for the Cougars in the fourth, UWA starting pitcher Hannah Mynard walked
Madeline Parker to force home
Lindsey Patton. It was
Laura Harris in the fifth who ripped an RBI double to left-center scoring
Hannah Rose Corbin. Patton scored again the seventh after Elston reached first base on a throwing error by the shortstop.
Patton led Columbus State going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Starting pitcher
Jessica Lopez was hit with the loss inside the circle after pitching all seven innings and striking out six batters.
Game 2: CSU 1, UWA 0
Columbus State starting pitcher
Hannah Rose Corbin earned the 1-0 shutout win after pitching seven innings, striking out seven, walking two and allowing one hit. Corbin carried a no-hit bid into the sixth.Â
The Cougars' lone run came from Elston, who hit the second homer of the day over the left-field fence in the bottom of the second.
That would be all Corbin needed. The junior dealt, retiring 10 in a row at a point. Only one Tiger reached third in the game but a foul out in the sixth ended the threat.
Elston finished with two hits, while
Paige Vincent and Corbin each recorded one.
