ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The No. 6 Columbus State University women's tennis team saw its season come to a close on Wednesday night after a 4-1 loss to No. 12 University of Indianapolis in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 NCAA DII Women's Tennis Championship. Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., is hosting the national championship.
The Lady Cougars strung together another banner year, finishing the season with a 20-6 record and reaching the national quarterfinals for the fifth straight season. CSU also won the Peach Belt Conference Tournament and were tri-regular season champions.
UIndy made it tough for Columbus State after taking the doubles point to start the evening. The Greyhounds won both first and second doubles in tight fashion to gain the early advantage, including a 7-5 win by Arina Amaning and Miassane Aik in the second flight over
Neila Trklja and
Agostina Bigotti. Anna Novikova and Maria Solnyshkina clinched the doubles win following a 6-4 upset over
Valentina Abrile and
Mariana Ramirez.
Indianapolis (21-2) went up 2-0 after a quick 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth single by Kristina Lagoda over
Yelena Labat. However from there, the Lady Cougars battled to stay alive in the match.
UIndy took a step closer after a three-set win by No. 53 Lea Cakarevic at sixth singles. Bigotti was neck-and-neck with the ranked foe before falling 6-3, 2-6, 6-0.Â
No. 9 Trklja put up a win for Columbus State in the top spot. She grabbed a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over No. 31 Novikova.
The Greyhounds finished off the match following a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 win by No. 17 Dunlap over No. 52
Mariana Ramirez at second singles.
Both third and fifth singles were in the third set when play was called.
