Softball Beats YHC, Shares PBC Regular-Season Title with UNG

The Cougars beat Young Harris 8-7 and became the co-champions of the PBC regular-season.

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - The No. 24 Columbus State University softball team beat Young Harris College 8-7 on Sunday, April 23 at 1 p.m., becoming the 2023 Co-Champions of the Peach Belt Conference Regular-Season with No. 2 University of North Georgia. The Cougars end the regular-season with a 41-12 record and a 24-3 record in the PBC.

It was a home run derby in the third game of the series as both teams hit a combined five homers on the day, starting with a Laura Harris bomb in the second inning. YHC the hit a homer in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at one.

Columbus State took the lead again in the third, making it 6-1. Madeline Parker collected an RBI with a single up the middle then Hannah Rose Corbin jacked a three-run homer, scoring Parker and Caitlyn Canady. Harris then hit her second bomb of the day, giving the Cougars six runs.

The Mountain Lions put a run on the board in the fifth thanks to a sacrifice fly. In the sixth, Parker hit the fourth home run of the day and Elyse Ambrose doubled down the right field line, scoring Corbin and making it an 8-2 ball game.

YHC hit two triples in the sixth to minimize CSU's lead to three runs. In the bottom of the seventh, the Mountain Lions began to make a comeback, scoring two more runs, however it was not enough for Corbin as she recorded her first save of the season.

Haylee Folds earned her 10th win of the season, striking out four, allowing six hits and five runs scored in 5.2 innings of work.

UP NEXT
Columbus State will be one of the two host sites for the 2023 PBC Tournament on April 28-30. The bracket will be released Tuesday night.
