Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader at USC Beaufort

The Cougars dropped game one 6-8 but bounced back to defeat the Sandsharks 13-5 in six innings on Saturday.

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - The Columbus State University softball team dropped a heartbreaking game one on a walk-off home run to the University of South Carolina Beaufort. Game one was fuel for the Cougars, who retaliated with a 13-5 victory in game two of the series. 

Game One - CSU 6, USCB 8 

Haylee Folds started in the circle for the Cougars. In 5.0 innings, she pitched lights out, holding the Sandsharks to two hits and no runs. 

Julianna Franklin entered in relief for Folds, but unfortunately, the Sandsharks jumped on her quickly, scoring five runs in the sixth to bring the game within one. 

Jessica Lopez entered in the bottom of the seventh to try to close things out but ultimately received the loss after USC Beaufort hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to seal the deal at 8-6. 

On offense, Kara Wegienka was a standout, going 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI, and one run scored. Katelyn Cooper also made a significant contribution, hitting a double and scoring a run. 

Junior Madison McDonald hit a grand slam in her first at-bat, driving in four RBIs for the team. 

Game Two - CSU 13, USCB 5

After a tough first-game loss, Jessica Lopez bounced back and earned herself a win in the circle for the Cougars in game two. Lopez threw 4.0 innings, striking out five and only allowing three runs off three hits. She improves to 8-4 on the season. 

Six Cougars had a multi-hit game. Senior Katelyn Cooper had an impressive game at the plate. She went 3-for-4 with one home run, one double, and three RBIs. 

Madison McDonald, a key player, continued to deliver hits and drive in runs for Columbus State in game two, going 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs. 

Anna Waites hit two doubles, drove in two RBIs, and scored two runs, while Nova Wright also hit a double and scored one run. 

Senior Caitlyn Canady also delivered at the plate, going 4-for-5 with one run scored, one RBI, and one stolen base. 

UP NEXT 

The Cougars will play the Sandsharks in the final game of the series on Sunday, April 14, at 12 p.m. at the Richard Gray Sports Complex.
