Lady Cougars Show Augusta Jaguars Who's Top Cat With 75-65 Win

Despite challenges, CSU remains undefeated at home

COLUMBUS – The Lady Cougars welcomed the Jaguars of Augusta University to Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center Saturday afternoon. CSU (13-5, 7-2 PBC) continued their dominance at home with a Saturday afternoon win against Augusta Univeristy. (13-6, 5-4 PBC). 

First Quarter 

The Lady Cougars won the ball at the tip off. Bre'Lyn Snipes got the game going with a layup to make the score tied at two. Both teams were off to a slow start for point. Olonna Rawls a layup and free throw after being fouled in the paint by Augusta.  

Augusta looked dangerous on a counter, but Snipes stole the ball and advanced down the court for a layup making the score 7-5. After a couple missed rebounds, Zuzanna Rudenko finally got points on the board with a layup, making the score with a minute left 13-11.  With less than thirty seconds on the clock, Kristyn Goshay got her first three-pointer of the game to end the first quarter with CSU ahead 18-13.  

Second Quarter 

With momentum, the Lady Cougars look to continue add to their lead. Rawls got fouled after a counter to make both of her free throws for CSU to get ahead by five. Moments later, Rawls made a defensive rebound and moved up to court for Jasmine Rai Stevens to make basket at the eight-minute mark for a score of 22-15.  

Fresh into the game, Simone Lett made her shot with an assist from Sophia Williams at 6:40. Augusta looked strong in the offense but could not seem to make a basket and Rawls came up with her fifth rebound of the game, fourth defensively. With less than two minutes on the board, Rawls made a vital steal, her third of the game, with the Jaguars creeping behind with the score 27-25. Rudenko was able to close out the first half with good points from the charity line to keep CSU ahead 33-25.  

Third Quarter  

The Lady Cougars got the ball at the start of the second half, and Letiya Reeves made the most of it by getting her ninth point of the night with an assist from Kristyn Goshay. Snipes put nothing but net in for a three pointer that put the Lady Cougars up 38-29. After a few missed attempts, Rawls was able to recover from a rebound and assist Reeves with another three pointer with 6:41 on the clock.  

CSU had difficulties keeping the ball ticking away within minutes and Augusta continued their pursuit. Under three minutes now left in the half, Augusta missed a three pointer that led to Reeves getting the rebound and Rudenko scoring for the Cougars to get a 10-point lead of 51-41. Ultimately, Augusta ended the scoring for the quarter, but it was not enough to get ahead of the Lady Cougars with the score at 56-47.  

Fourth Quarter 

The Jaguars got points on the board to start the final quarter of the game. CSU missed opportunities to maintain their lead and Augusta kept capitalizing on their chances to make the score 56-55 with 7:13 on the clock. Following a CSU timeout, Snipes got more points back on the board with a jump shot and free throw to make the score 60-57. 

Less than five on the clock and Augusta managed to make a comeback tying the game at 62. In need of points, Goshay put her body on the line for fouls and racked up a total of four points in less than thirty seconds, which put the Cougars up 68-62. Augusta committed a series of fouls with 90 seconds left on the clock. Goshay made a new home on the charity line by making six free throws for a total score of 74-65 for the Lady Cougars. With a comfortable 10-point lead, CSU was able to end the game passing the ball around and end the game winning 75-65.  

In the Numbers 

  • Columbus State ended the game with 75 points, scoring 42.4% (25-of-59) from the field, 15.8% (3-of-19) on three pointers, and 91.7% (22-of-24) in free throws.  

  • Reeves led the Lady Cougars in points with 21, scoring 50.0% (8-of-16) from the field, 20.0% (1-of-5) in three pointers, and 100.0% (4-of-4) in free throws.  

  • Snipes was right behind with 18 points, scoring most of her points from the field with 47.1% (8-of-17).  

  • CSU led the game in rebounds with 12 offensive rebounds and 323 defensively to total 44 rebounds.  

  • Goshay had a major impact on the game towards the final whistle as she dominated at the charity line with an outstanding 91.7% (11-of-12) in free throws.  

  • The Lady Cougars were on the hunt for steal totaling 13 against Augusta.

  • The Lady Cougars will travel to neighboring Americus, GA to face the Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern State for a mid-week match up starting at 5:30 p.m. ET.
