COLUMBUS - Columbus State University women's track & field opened the season on home soil on Saturday, hosting the J.D. Evilsizer Invitational at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus.
The Lady Cougars picked up a handful of top 10 finishes and produced a good showing for the hometown meet.
Saturday's meet opened with field events and followed with the racing portion. In the high jump, Shania Pinnock and Liza Varnum finished tied for sixth with marks of 1.35m. During the pole vault, CSU nearly swept the podium as Sarah Arnold and Alesia Johnson picked up the top two places. Arnold marked a height of 3.05m followed by 2.45m from Johnson.
For the jumps, Kaitlyn Alston jumped for 10.10m in the triple jump for second while Jamelaah Mosely picked up the lone top 10 finish in the long jump with 4.57m for ninth.
In the throws, Kayli Miller finished fourth in the discus (33.01m) and eighth in the shot put (9.19m).
As for the 100m hurdles, Varnum led with a fifth-place finish ahead of Alston and Syni Lacy in sixth and seventh, respectively. Varnum marked a time of 16.68s with Alston recording 17.16s and Lacy racing for 17.22s. The 400m hurdles followed with Alston picking up fourth place with a time of 1:15.74.
In the sprints, the 100m dash was highly contested as CSU managed to pick up 26th and 27th from Mosely and Amber Johnson. In the 200m dash, Montgomery highlighted with the lone top 10 finish, recording 6th after a time of 25.84s.
During the longer races, Alesia Johnson picked up a top 10 placement in the 400m with a time of 1:03.72. As for the 1,500-meter race Kaeleigh Brooks and Layla Alright highlighted with placements, finishing in fifth and eighth, respectively. Brooks ran a time of 5:25.90 while Albright ran a time of 5:35.46. Lastly in the 5,000-meter run, Albright finished in fourth with a time of 22:18.53.
In the women's 4x100 meter relay, Montgomery, Azorria Higgins, Chassidy Lock, and Varnum raced to a fourth-place finish for a time of 50.30s.
