Fifth-Seeded Women’s Basketball Falls to Top-Seeded North Georgia

CSU falls 64-56 to UNG

DAHLONEGA, Ga.  – Fifth-seeded Columbus State University women's basketball faces the top-seeded North Georgia in the UNG Convocation Center on Saturday night in an All-PBC Round of 32 clash at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Dahlonega, Ga.
 
The Lady Cougars (21-9) battled with the Nighthawks (31-2) in a 64-56 loss.
 
 

First Quarter
 
UNG opened with a 9-0 punch in the first five minutes before Samara Saunders and the Lady Cougars could find a basket. Columbus State regained their footing in the final half of the period, leading with a 10-6 stretch to pull within a five-point deficit. Bre'lyn Snipes led the way with 7 points.
 
Second Quarter
 
The Lady Cougars leveled the game at 17-all within two minutes of the second period, moving with a 7-2 run led by Aaliyah Ferrell's five. Columbus State battled for the rest of the period in back-and-forth play that finished with a 26-24 advantage at the break. Snipes led the stretch with five points followed by three from Jasmine Rai Stevens.
 
Third Quarter
 
The third quarter resulted in a cat-and-mouse game with more back-and-forth action as UNG managed to outscore CSU 16-14. The Nighthawks managed to level the game at 40-40 with 2:17 to play, leaving the final couple of minutes in scoreless efforts. Snipes lit up the quarter with 11 points to carry the efforts for CSU.
 
Fourth Quarter
 
Columbus State edged out North Georgia in an opening 11-7 stretch of play over the first few minutes to lead 51-47. Five individuals contributed some points in the run led by three from Sophia Williams. Unfortunately, the momentum was halted for CSU as UNG surged into the quarter with a big 17-5 swing to seal the fate of the Lady Cougars in the 64-56 loss.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • The Lady Cougars finished the shooting for 33.9% (20-of-59), 24% (6-of-25) from three, and 76.95 (10-of-13) from the foul line.
  • Snipes led with 25 points while going 8-for-15 from the field and 5-for-5 from the foul line.
  • Olonna Rawls followed with 11 points.
  • CSU scored 26 points in the paint and 13 second chance points.
  • Williams dished out six assists.
  • CSU's defense gathered nine steals on 16 UNG turnovers.
