St. Augustine, Fla. - Columbus State played on a rain-soaked field at Flagler in a contest that remained scoreless until the 82nd minute of action. A trio of late goals propelled the No. 10 ranked Lady Cougars to a 3-0 shutout of the Saints. CSU improves to 9-3, 6-0 in the PBC while Flagler falls to 4-7-2, 1-4-2 in the conference.
After just over 82 minutes of scoreless play, freshman forward Nicole Corcione made a run down the right side and crossed the ball into the box to sophomore midfielder Andi Larese, whose shot went into the net off the left post to break the silence. It was Larese's first season goal and third in her career.
Just 39 seconds later, junior defender Shea Wilby made a touch pass to Corcione who added a goal of her own to put the Lady Cougars up 2-0. For good measure in the 86th minute, Corcione and Larese swapped favors when the latter made a pass into the middle of the box to assist Corcione in her eighth goal of the year.
"I am very proud of our team as a whole," said CSU head coach Jay Entlich. "To score three goals against a very good team and keep a clean sheet, we are thrilled."
Columbus State's scores were long overdue as they outshot Flagler 23-3 in the match, 14 of which were on goal. The Saints had just two shots in the first half and one on goal in the second half by Chloe Durham which was grabbed by CSU sophomore goalkeeper Meosha Hatcher. Hatcher put up her fourth shutout of the year and posts a 8-1-0 record.
CSU sophomore forward Chelsea Person had six shots, four on goal, and junior forward Kelsey Pelletier made four shots, three on goal. Flagler's goalie Casey Merson made 11 saves on the day and is now 2-6-1.
The Lady Cougars return home to the Walden Soccer Complex Friday to host Valdosta State after the Blazers, 7-1-3, make a stop in Rome at Shorter this Wednesday. The game is set for 4:00 p.m. and live statistics are available at www.CSUCougars.com.
