Americus - Eight different players scored including multi-goal performances by Chelsea Person and Nicole Corcione as the 10th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team breezed to a 10-0 victory over Georgia Southwestern Wednesday afternoon. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at Hurricane Field in Americus.
The 10 goals scored are the third most in a single match by the Lady Cougars in program history and the most in a match since CSU defeated Georgia Southwestern 11-0 on October 29, 2008.
Scoring started early for Columbus State (8-3-0, 5-0-0 PBC) as Person raced down the field after the opening kickoff to score the match's first goal after just 15 seconds ticked off the clock. It was the quickest goal to ever begin a Lady Cougar match and was the 12th fastest goal scored in NCAA Division II history.
Just after the 10-minute mark, Jessica Sauer lined up for a corner kick and found Corcione in the box for the match's second goal.
Over a 10-minute stretch, CSU's lead quickly became 5-0. In the 34th minute, Mandy Janowitz dribbled down the left side of the field and fired a shot into the top right portion of the goal from 12-yards out to make it 3-0. Six minutes later two quick passes by Courtney Jacquay and Jackie Hellett assisted Kara Barber's first collegiate goal while Hellett scored her first goal of the season in the 44th minute dribbling through defenders to find the lower left side of the goal.
Coming out of the break, it was Person again as she took a pass from Taylor Marks and capped off her second goal of the match just 18 seconds into the second half.
In the 54th minute, Kelsey Pelletier got into the scoring frenzy on a nice set piece. After a short corner kick, Marks found Pelletier on the endline where the junior made it a 7-0 match.
After a Georgia Southwestern (0-10-1, 0-4-1) own goal in the 58th minute, Tori Hood fired a shot that went off of the keeper's hands and into the net. The play began with a corner kick that neither side could corral until Hood finished with the goal.
Columbus State's final goal came off of the foot of Corcione in the 71st minute. The freshman drove past the Hurricane defense and juked out an attacking goalkeeper to find an open net and an easy goal.
In all, Columbus State had 33 shots to Georgia Southwestern's one. It was also the second consecutive match in which CSU held its opponent to five shots or less.
Chelsea Person and Nicole Corcione turned in the first two multi-goal performances for the Lady Cougars this season. It was Person's first two-goal match of her two-year career.
Freshman Maylyn Parsons won her first collegiate match while picking up a shutout. She made a save on GSW's only shot.
Vanna Lucke fell to 0-7-1 making six saves while allowing seven goals. Elyse Gowen played the final 36:53 allowing the final three goals.
Columbus State will return to the field on Monday, October 14 to take on Flagler in St. Augustine, Fla. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m.
