Dahlonega, Ga. - Behind a goal in the third minute, the 17th-ranked Columbus State University soccer team took down fourth-ranked North Georgia 1-0 on Wednesday night. The Peach Belt Conference match was played at the UNG Soccer Complex in Dahlonega, Ga.
The victory is just the second over a top-five opponent in program history, also defeating No. 3 Armstrong in 2013.
Right out of the gates, Columbus State (12-1-1, 7-1-0) jumped on top as Kelsey Pelletier found the back of the net.
After a throw in, Nicole Corcione flicked a ball to Pelletier who finished to give CSU the early lead. It was the sixth goal of the season for the senior.
The two sides settled into a defensive battle from there combining for just nine shots in the first half.
The intensity picked up after the break as both teams charged toward the net.
Sydney Reeder sent a pair of early shots over the crossbar for North Georgia (12-2-1, 6-1-1) keeping the Lady Cougars in front.
Maylyn Parsons came up huge in the net in the 57th minute, stopping a shot from Rachel VanHorn.
CSU and North Georgia continued to battle, but the two defenses kept the ball out of the goal the remainder of the night.
Maylyn Parsons earned her seventh shutout of the season keeping the Nighthawks out of the net for 90 minutes.
North Georgia narrowly outshot the Lady Cougars 12-11 on the night.
Columbus State wraps up the home portion of the regular season on Saturday as the Lady Cougars host Lander for Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
