Columbus - After a slow start, the 17th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team downed Lander 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Walden Soccer Complex. The match was the final home game of the regular season for the Lady Cougars.

"I thought some people really stepped today," said CSU head coach Jay Entlich. "Kelsey (Pelletier) scored a great goal and Kiana Nicholson played great off the bench."

Columbus State (13-1-1, 8-1-0) came firing out of the gates putting four shots on net in the first 15 minutes. However, Lander goalkeeper Katie Lyle made saves on all four.

It took nearly 30 minutes before Lander (6-3-4, 3-3-3) finally got off its first shot, but Sydney Thompson only forced Maylyn Parsons to make her first save to keep the game scoreless.

The two sides continued their defensive stalemate throughout the first half heading to the locker room at halftime scoreless.

The Lady Cougars finally broke through just under 10 minutes into the second half.

Nicole Corcione played a ball into the box that was deflected by Kiana Nicholson. The ball wound up on the foot of Kelsey Pelletier, and the senior buried it for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Fifteen minutes later, Nicholson set up another goal for CSU passing off to Cassandra Wade. The freshman dribbled herself into a good shooting position and rocketed the ball off the bottom of the crossbar and in. The goal was her third of the year.

Parsons kept the only Lander shot out of the net over the final 15 minutes to preserve the clean sheet. The shutout was the eighth of the year for the sophomore.

CSU outshot the Bearcats 14-5 on the afternoon.

Columbus State will close out the regular season with two matches away from home. The first will come on Wednesday as the Lady Cougars travel to Montevallo. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
