Montevallo, Ala. - Behind an offensive flurry, the seventh-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team clinched the 2014 Peach Belt Conference regular season championship, defeating Montevallo 5-1. The match was played at Varsity Field in Montevallo, Ala.
The championship is the eighth for the Lady Cougars under Coach Jay Entlich, now in his 11th season. CSU won a share of the title last year. The program's last outright PBC championship came with their fifth straight in 2009.
Columbus State (15-0-1) came out firing with six shots in the first 19 minutes. It was the seventh shot in the 20th minute that broke the ice.
Nicole Corcione took a pass from Taylor Marks and buried the ball in the back of the net. The sophomore from Candler, N.C. would make another appearance on the score sheet later in the match.
Just minutes later, Montevallo (1-11-1) committed a hard foul inside the box and received a yellow card. Kelsey Pelletier converted the penalty kick for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The Lady Cougars made a return trip to the six-yard box in the 28th minute. This time, Mandy Janowitz rocketed a penalty kick for her fifth goal of 2014.
The fireworks continued for CSU in the second half. Corcione broke through in the 49th minute for an unassisted tally. Corcione's second goal of the night was her fifth of the season.
Stephanie Kolwicz wrapped up the scoring on a pass from Kiana Nicholson in the 70th minute. The Lady Cougars' final goal of the night was the Columbus, Ga. native's fourth goal of the year.
The Falcons broke up the shutout in the 85th minute as Jade Pennock found the back of the net off a pass from Julie Heltne.
Maylyn Parsons made one save in goal for Columbus State in the first half.
Meosha Hatcher took keeping duties for the Lady Cougars in the second half, allowing one goal and saving two shots.
CSU outshot Montevallo 22-5 on the night.
Columbus State will close out the regular season on the road as the Lady Cougars take on UNC Pembroke on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
