Young Harris, Ga. - Tallying at least three goals for the fifth consecutive match, the fifth-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over Young Harris on Saturday. The Peach Belt Conference match was played at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field in Young Harris, Ga.
Columbus State (8-0-1, 4-0-0) took 11 shots over the first 40 minutes, including an early shot from Taylor Marks that hit the post, but it was the 12th shot that finally got through.
Rebecca Calder set the play up passing off the ball to Stephanie Kolwicz who buried a shot into the right side. For the sophomore, it was her second goal of the season.
For the third straight match, the Lady Cougars came quickly out of the locker room after halftime. In the 52nd minute, Mandy Janowitz corralled the ball in the box and beat the Mountain Lions' goalkeeper for her third goal in the last two games.
Young Harris (2-6-0, 1-4-0) cut the lead in half with 15 minutes to play. Rachel Hill launched a shot from nearly 35 yards out scoring her first goal of the season.
The Lady Cougars finally put the game away in the 84th minute. Chelsea Person tossed a thrown in into the box that found the head of Kelsey Pelletier and ended up in the back of the net. It was the third goal of the year for Pelletier.
Columbus State outshot the Mountain Lions 27-8 on the afternoon running its unbeaten streak to nine matches to start the season.
Maylyn Parsons once again played all 90 minutes in net allowing just the one goal. The sophomore made five saves on six chances.
Arielle Charles was saddled with the loss after giving up the first two CSU goals in just over 82 minutes of action. Kylie Mason came off the bench and surrendered the final goal.
Columbus State returns home for a match against Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday, October 8. The match will be the annual Kicks for a Cure game for the Lady Cougars. CSU players will be donning pink jerseys for the night and collecting donations that will go to support breast cancer research. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. from the Walden Soccer Complex.
