Columbus - Kelsey Pelletier's goal in the 104th minute gave the fourth-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team the 1-0 double overtime victory Sunday over Wingate and sends the Lady Cougars into the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The second round match was played at the Walden Soccer Complex in Columbus.

Columbus State (20-0-1) had numerous chances early in the second overtime, but Andi Larese found Pelletier in the left side of the box, and the senior beat the keeper to the far post for the game-winning goal.

"I'm just so happy for this group of young ladies to end up on the positive side of a game like this that was so tight," commented CSU head coach Jay Entlich.

"Wingate is a terrific team, and I really believe it's one of the best we've played all year."

The first half saw the defense stand tall as the two sides combined for just five shots through the first 45 minutes.

Brooke Howell had the best chance of the opening half, as the Bulldog lifted a shot high and wide left in the 19th minute.

After halftime, the Lady Cougars looked to have the first goal of the game in the 47th minute. Ashley Miller deflected a ball toward the upper right corner of the net, but the ball did not fully cross the goalline keeping the match scoreless.

In the 56th minute, Taylor Marks fired a shot off a corner kick that was headed for the far post. WU defender Kaitlyn Fletcher kept the ball out of the net to once again keep the Lady Cougars off the board.

Nicole Corcione put a header on frame in the 63rd minute forcing Ashlyn Hardie to make one of her six saves. The sophomore had another chance in the 84th minute, but Hardie came up big again making another save.

Wingate's best second-half look happened in the 67th minute as Howell uncorked a shot from 25 yards out. Maylyn Parsons leapt high to deflect the shot over the crossbar.

In the overtime period, it was Corcione again that forced Hardie to make a play as the keeper made her final save of the match in the 94th minute.

With the seconds ticking down in the first overtime, Kiana Nicholson found the ball on her foot inside the box, but her attempt was blocked as time expired.

Wingate (13-3-4) fired the first shot of the second overtime, but Columbus State would control from there setting up Pelletier's heroics.

Maylyn Parsons earned her 11th shutout of the season, marking just the second time the Bulldogs had been shut out this season.

Columbus State will now face Lenoir-Rhyne in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, November 21. The Bears bested North Georgia in penalty kicks on Sunday. The third and fourth rounds will be held at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.
