Pensacola, Fla. - Goals by Stephanie Kolwicz and Tori Hood backed a stellar effort from Maylyn Parsons in goal as the 20th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team knocked off Texas A&M-Commerce 2-0 in the first game of the UWF Collegiate Invitational. The match was played at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola, Fla.
The Lady Cougars' (2-0-0) furious attack broke through in the 20th minute. Nicole Corcione crossed a pass into the box that found the legs of Kolwicz, who poked it by Lions goalkeeper Courtnie Northern. Kolwicz's strike was her first goal of the season.
Commerce's best chance of the first half came during a 35th-minute corner kick. The Lions rattled off three shots in 35 seconds. Shots one and two found the post and crossbar, and Parsons got in front of a third shot from Callie Annett to preserve the clean sheet.
Parsons would see little additional attack, finishing the night with four saves. The shutout is the first of the season for the sophomore from Greenville, S.C., who recorded five shutouts as a freshman.
The Lady Cougars tacked on an insurance goal in the 79th minute. Hood took a Taylor Marks pass with her head and sent it flying into the back of the net for her second goal of the year.
Kolwicz, Hood and company shelled Commerce throughout the afternoon, outshooting the Lions 25-10 including 13-4 in shots on goal.
Columbus State returns to the pitch on Sunday morning for a test against ninth-ranked Rollins in the UWF Collegiate Invitational. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
