Savannah, Ga. - Just over one minute into the second overtime, junior Chelsea Person headed in the game-winning goal to give the fifth-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team a 3-2 victory over rival Armstrong. The match took place at the Armstrong Soccer Field in Savannah, Ga.
With the game tied at two starting the second overtime, Columbus State (4-0-1, 1-0-0) quickly worked down the field and earned a corner kick after a Taylor Marks shot was saved.
Senior Ashley Miller swung the corner kick toward the near post finding the head of Person who put it into the net ending the contest. The goal was the second of the match for the Decatur, Ga. native.
The match got off to a wild start with four goals scored in the first 19 minutes of action.
Armstrong (3-2-0, 0-1-0) struck first just three minutes into the contest. Amanda Green played a perfect through ball to Jenny Allen who put the Pirates on the board first with her fourth goal of the season.
Ten minutes later, Allen was at it again, this time starting the play. Allen put a pass on the foot of Randi Schroedel who scored her first goal of the year to give Armstrong a 2-0 lead.
It didn't take long for the Lady Cougars to respond though. One minute after the second Armstrong goal, freshman Cassandra Wade netted her second goal of the season scoring from outside the box to cut the lead in half.
The match was then leveled in the 19th minute as Person beat Armstrong goalkeeper Morgan Luckie for the first of her two goals.
The scoring slowed from there, but the offensive attacks on the net did not.
Columbus State took 23 shots in the match, 13 of which were on target.
Maylyn Parsons surrendered the early two goals in net for CSU, but then stonewalled the Pirate attack over the next 88 minutes for her fourth win of the season.
Columbus State will head right back out on the road on Wednesday, September 24 as they travel to take on Tusculum. The match will kickoff at 4:00 p.m. from Greeneville, Tenn.
