Columbus - Four different Lady Cougars scored as the Columbus State University women's soccer team opened the 2014 season with a 4-2 win over Mount Olive Friday night at the Walden Soccer Complex.
Columbus State (1-0-0) fired 10 shots at the net before finally breaking through. It was sophomore Taylor Marks who found the lower right corner of the net in the 26th minute to put the Lady Cougars on the board first.
Mount Olive (0-1-0) wasted no time leveling the match as Jess Hickey took a cross from Lauren Power and buried it in the back of the net less than four minutes later.
The Lady Cougars would control the remainder of the half tallying two more goals before the break.
In the 36th minute, Kelsey Pelletier dribbled clear down the right side and worked a perfect cross in front of the net. The pass found the knee of Tori Hood who touched it into the net to regain the lead for CSU.
Just before the half, Columbus State added one more to its total as Claire Belay scored from 25-yards out after a failed UMO clearance.
CSU pressed the issue in the second half as well, but didn't manage a goal until the 82nd minute when Kiana Nicholson took a poor clearance and beat the keeper one-on-one.
Mount Olive brought the final margin down to two in the 84th minute as Ellie Barnes finished off a chance set up by Kristin Power.
Columbus State dominated offensively registering 28 shots to just six for the Trojans.
The Lady Cougars forced UMO goalkeeper Gigi Ramirez to make 14 saves on the night on 18 shots on goal.
Maylyn Parsons (1-0-0) picked up the victory in goal making two saves on three shots in the first half.
Meosha Hatcher played the final 45 minutes allowing one goal and making one save.
Columbus State returns to the pitch on Sunday afternoon as they host No. 2 West Florida in the conclusion of the CSU Collegiate Invitational. UWF earned a 4-1 victory over Lincoln Memorial in game three of the day. Kickoff Sunday is set for 4:00 p.m.
