Josh FullerCOLUMBUS – Four second half goals propelled the 19
th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team to a 6-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over Young Harris Saturday. The match took place at the Walden Soccer Complex.
The match was also CSU's annual 'Kicks for the Cure' event, raising money and awareness to breast cancer. All donations went to the American Cancer Society.
"We played a solid match today," commented head coach
Jay Entlich. "We came out and got two early goals and then we were able to finish them off with the four goals in the second period, which was great to see."
Columbus State (7-2-1, 3-0-1 PBC) outshot Young Harris 29-4, including a 16-1 advantage in the first period.
The Lady Cougars started the shooting barrage early as
Nicole Corcione fired off a shot that was high in the third minute.
After seven more shot attempts, CSU was able to break through as
Olivia Jarrell scored her fifth goal of the season in the 21
st minute. The freshman took a pass from senior
Shelby Rolling before beating YHC goalie Arielle Charles.
A few moments later it was 2-0 Columbus State as
Chelsea Person took a shot after corralling an
Andi Larese free kick in the 24
th minute.
Person was right back at it coming out of the halftime break, scoring her second goal of the match in the 48
th minute. Corcione was able to squeeze a pass into the box before the senior beat Charles to the upper portion of the goal.
Very similar to the first period, the Lady Cougars kept up the attack and got their fourth goal during the 52
nd minute of action. Young Harris (2-5-0, 0-4-0) turned the ball over in the box and Jarrell took advantage of it, blasting a shot into the lower left corner.
Columbus State continued to press on and made it 5-0 in the 55
th minute as
Cassandra Wade got in the scoring mix. Wade took a long shot from 20-yards out and nailed it into the back of the net.
Mandy Janowitz scored the final CSU goal in the 63
rd minute cleaning up her own rebound after firing a shot that was blocked in front of the net. It was the junior's third goal on the season.
Maylyn Parsons recorded the victory in goal for the Lady Cougars playing the first 60 minutes of the match.
Paige Betsill also saw time in goal, saving her only attempt.
Columbus State will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 6 against Georgia Southwestern. The match will take place in Americus, Ga.
