Columbus State ends the regular season at 15-2-1 overall and 10-0-1 in conference play. The victory was the 12
th straight for the Lady Cougars and wraps up a perfect month of October that saw CSU outscore the opposition 42-1.
"We scored two goals off set pieces, which was good to see because we haven't done that much this season," said head coach
Jay Entlich. "We were also able to keep a clean sheet and we're pleased with that."
The Lady Cougars got the scoring started in the 24
th minute.
Chelsea Person played a short corner into
Taylor Marks who returned the pass to Person on the left edge of the box. The redshirt-senior then blasted a shot inside the far post for her sixth goal of the season.
Seven minutes later, Person was the one setting up the offense as she played a ball into the box. Freshman
Olivia Jarrell was able to get on the end of it and beat UNCP goalkeeper Janae Aiken from close range to extend the lead to 2-0. For Jarrell, it was her 11
th goal of the season.
Columbus State tacked on two more tallies in the first 20 minutes of the second half.
Person got back in the action unintentionally in the 60
th minute. Looking to find a teammate on a corner kick attempt, Person was able to bend the ball just inside the far post and into the side netting to give her a second multi-goal match of the season.
Three minutes later, CSU struck again as
Shelby Rolling slid a pass to
Cassandra Wade inside the box. Wade calmly tucked the shot inside the left post to edge the lead out to four and create the final margin.
Maylyn Parsons played just over 80 minutes in net for her 14
th victory of the season. The junior combined with
Paige Betsill for the fifth consecutive shutout by the Lady Cougars.
On the day, Columbus State outshot UNC Pembroke (8-8-1, 6-4-1) 29-9.
Columbus State will now head into postseason play, starting with the PBC quarterfinals on Tuesday night. The match will be played at the Walden Soccer Complex, but the opponent and time are still to be determined.
