Will DeBoerEVANS, Ga. – After a showdown that further solidified the matchup as the league's premiere rivalry, the sixth-ranked and top-seeded Columbus State University women's soccer team defeated 17th-ranked and second-seeded North Georgia to win its sixth Peach Belt Conference tournament championship on Sunday. The championship match was played at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga.
The win gives the Lady Cougars a sweep of the PBC's regular season and tournament titles for the second consecutive season. It also counts as a milestone for head coach Jay Entlich, who has now won 200 matches in his career at CSU.
Columbus State (18-2-1) did not take long to find the back of the net. In the ninth minute, All-Conference midfielder Shelby Rolling found the ball at her feet just outside the top of the box. The senior then unleashed a shot that rocketed into the top of the net, easily beating Nighthawk goalkeeper Mallory Sayre. The goal was Rolling's sixth of the season and would prove a sign of things to come.
North Georgia (15-3-1) quickly responded, as Jacy Ramey charged the box in the 12th minute and fired off a shot on goal. All-PBC selection Maylyn Parsons swatted the attempt back, but Ramey took her own rebound and put it in the back of the net for her league-leading 13th goal of the season.
The teams traded chances over the next 14 minutes before the Lady Cougars went up again. Forward Mandy Janowitz patiently controlled the ball on the left side of the box, beat two UNG defenders and snuck a shot at the toughest of angles just inside the far post. For Janowitz, it was her seventh goal of the year, and for CSU it was a lead they would hold for good.
Rolling again came through with an insurance tally in the 59th minute. With Chelsea Person ready for a corner kick, the Nighthawks turned their defensive focus on PBC Player of the Year Nicole Corcione. Person's corner sailed over Corcione's head but found the foot of Rolling in the center of the box, and the Stayner, Ontario native found the net for her seventh goal and second of the match.
The Nighthawks battled back in the 75th minute. Rachel VanHorn set up on the left side of the box and airmailed a cross that curled away from Parsons in goal. Madison Salters received the pass and tapped it in with her right foot.
UNG kept the pressure up for the rest of the match, as the Lady Cougars fought off rally. The big chance for North Georgia came in the 81st minute, but the CSU back line block a Salters shot to preserve the victory. The Lady Cougars eventually swept the ball away in the final seconds and set off a wild celebration in the cold rain.
Columbus State has now won four straight matches against North Georgia, and the teams' last seven matchups have been decided by one goal or fewer. CSU is 5-1-1 against UNG dating back to 2011.
Shelby Rolling was named the PBC Tournament MVP after scoring three goals and assisting on another. Joining Rolling on the All-Tournament team were forward Mandy Janowitz and defenders Andi Larese and Brooke Nail.
With the PBC's automatic bid secured, Columbus State awaits its NCAA Tournament fate. The 2015 NCAA Tournament Selection Show will take place on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
