th-ranked Columbus State University women's basketball team returned to action with a 76-54 victory at Tuskegee on Saturday. The non-conference match was played at Chappie James Arena in Tuskegee, Ala.
Michelle Mitchell led the way for the Lady Cougars with 24 points. The reigning Southeast Region Player of the Year was 10-of-16 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line.
Gabby Williams made 5-of-9 shots for 12 points, while
Ashley Asouzu turned in nine points and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds. Asouzu picked up 11 of her 20 rebounds on the offensive end helping Columbus State crush the Tigerettes on the glass.
Ashley Johnson added nine points and
Tatiana Wayne chipped in eight of her own.
CSU opened up a seven-point advantage after one quarter of play, before a low-scoring second left Columbus State with a 30-22 edge at halftime.
The Lady Cougar offense improved in the second half, outscoring Tuskegee 22-16 and 24-16 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
After a slow start, Columbus State finished the night at 45.3 percent (29-of-64) from the field, knocking down just 4-of-19 three-pointers. The Lady Cougars were 14-of-20 (70 percent) from the free throw line.
Tuskegee was limited to just 33.3 percent (13-of-39) shooting. The Tigerettes picked up nearly half of their points at the charity stripe, making 25-of-40 attempts.
Columbus State will be on the road again on Tuesday night as the Lady Cougars travel to Albany State. CSU defeated the Lady Rams 81-46 on Nov. 14 in Columbus. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
