Stephen WilliamsWINTER PARK, Fla. – Taking on the top-ranked team in the country, the third-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team conceded an early goal and fell 1-0 at No. 1 Rollins on Sunday. The match was played at Barker Family Stadium in Winter Park, Fla.
"We made an early mistake and it cost us," said CSU head coach
Jay Entlich. "We had our chances, but Rollins is a very good team and they deserve all the credit today."
Columbus State (2-2-0) got off to a fast start with a dangerous opportunity in the match's first minute.
Chelsea Person found herself in the box with the ball on her foot, but Rollins keeper Carly Stevens was up to the challenge keeping the ball out of the net.
Nicole Corcione teed up a second chance on the rebound, however the shot was blocked, stopping the early opportunity.
Just over three minutes into the match, inclement weather settled into the Winter Park area forcing play to be stopped. The match was delayed for nearly 45 minutes.
The Lady Cougars continued to control play after the delay, taking the first six shots of the match before Rollins (3-1-0) finally put its first attempt on the board.
The Tars finally broke through on their third shot of the day. Kathryn O'Brien brought down a cross in the box and found the net for what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 27
th minute.
The two sides exchanged shots over the next 30 minutes of play until it appeared that Columbus State had leveled the match. In the 58
th minute,
Mandy Janowitz beat the keeper and put the ball in the net. However, the offsides flag was up, wiping off the potential tying goal.
CSU put five more shots toward the net the rest of the way, including one in the final minute. Stevens kept the Lady Cougars off the board though, giving the Tars a 1-0 win.
Rollins outshot the Lady Cougars 16-14 over the 90 minutes.
Maylyn Parsons made six saves for CSU.
Columbus State will now play the next four matches at the Walden Soccer Complex, starting with a midweek date against Shorter on Wednesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
