Stephen WilliamsCOLUMBUS – Despite outshooting the opposition 27-2, the 21
st-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team needed a 99
th minute goal from
Nicole Corcione to push past West Alabama 1-0 on Tuesday night. The non-conference match was played at the Walden Soccer Complex.
With the clock winding down in the first overtime period, senior
Andi Larese served a ball over the top of the defense. The ball found the head of Corcione and the junior flicked it just inside the far post for the game-winner. The goal was the fifth of the season for the Candler, N.C. native and her third in the last two matches.
"I'm very pleased with the result tonight," said head coach
Jay Entlich. "It's very difficult to score against a bunker defense, but we created a lot of chances.
"West Alabama played great defense all night and I thought we scored a great goal to win it."
Columbus State (4-2-1) started its onslaught on the Tiger net in the first half. Senior
Shelby Rolling put three shots toward the goal over the first 17 minutes, requiring a pair of saves from Issy Foster.
The second of the three shots came off a corner kick from
Chelsea Person. Rolling's header was ticketed for the back of the net, but Foster's diving attempt kept it out. The rebound rolled to the foot of
Mandy Janowitz, but the junior launched her shot just outside of the post to keep the game scoreless.
The shots kept coming leading up to halftime, as CSU held a 10-0 advantage at the break.
West Alabama (3-2-0) finally got its first shot off just over 30 seconds into the second period. Chelsea Commings put one on net that
Maylyn Parsons was easily able to stop for her only save of the night.
From there, it was all Lady Cougars as Columbus State kept taking chances at the net. Foster and the Tiger defense continued to stonewall CSU taking the match into overtime.
The start of the extra period was slow for both sides. Columbus State did not take its first shot until nearly three minutes to play, but the first two CSU attempts were both blocked. Less than two minutes later, the Lady Cougars finally broke through to earn their fourth win of the season.
Maylyn Parsons played a spotless night in net, making the only save that was required of her.
Columbus State will be back in action on Saturday as the Lady Cougars return to Peach Belt Conference play. CSU will take on USC Aiken with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from the Walden Soccer Complex.
