COLUMBUS – Three first half goals were more than enough for the 13th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team as the Lady Cougars defeated Lander 5-0 Saturday afternoon. The match was played at the Walden Soccer Complex.

In addition, it was CSU's annual "Kicks for the Cure" match, raising money and attention to breast cancer awareness.

"We played really well in the first half," stated head coach Jay Entlich. "We were really efficient with our shots and knew what we wanted to do with the ball. Consistency is the key and I feel like we are improving each and every day."

Lander (2-5-1, 1-2-1 PBC) recorded the first shot of the match in the fourth minute, but from there it was all Columbus State.

Less than six minutes later, Mandy Janowtiz used a great flip pass to direct the ball to a streaking Nicole Corcione. The senior used her speed to race by the defenders and rifled a shot to the right side of the goal to give CSU a 1-0 lead.

It would stay 1-0 until the 34th minute when a great header from Cassandra Wade made it 2-0. Amanda Murphy had the ball near the near sideline before skying a ball into the box. Wade jumped over all the defenders and sent a rocket into the back of the net.

Columbus State (7-2-0, 3-1-0) added on a third goal before the break. On a corner kick, Angelica Tabares sent the ball into the box. After rolling around for a second, Claire Belay put her head on the ball and sent it past the goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.

The second half started quick for CSU as the Lady Cougars fired three shots in the first five minutes of play. In the 52nd minute, Columbus State struck again. Wade played an amazing through ball to Corcione, who once again used her speed to separate from defenders. Corcione calmly blasted a shot into the net for her second goal of the match.

After some more good looks on the net, Columbus State scored its final goal in the final minute of the match. Keyle Snyder played a ball to Georgia Barton just outside the top of the box. The junior chipped the shot over the goalkeeper's head for the goal.

Columbus State had 11 shots in each period and outshot the Bearcats 22-2. CSU also won the corner battle 8-0.

The Lady Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday, October 5 against Clayton State. The match will begin at 6 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
