COLUMBUS – The second-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team began the season with a bang, scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes to defeat 18th-ranked North Alabama 3-0 Friday night. The match was a part of the annual CSU Collegiate Invitational at the Walden Soccer Complex.
Â
"It was great to start the match with two early goals against a very talented team," said CSU head coach
Jay Entlich. "We coasted for a while in the latter part of the first half and we need to play a complete match.
Â
"We have a short turnaround to get ready for another tough match on Sunday against Wingate."
Â
Columbus State began the match on the attack getting early looks at the net. In the sixth minute,
Taylor Marks slid a pass through defenders to
Cassandra Wade in the right side of the box. Wade rifled the ball towards the goal where UNA goalkeeper Kate Webster was able to get a hand on it, but couldn't stop it from crossing the line for a goal.
Â
Just a few minutes later, the Lady Cougars were pressing up the field again.
Olivia Jarrell maneuvered her way down the far side of the field before slipping a nice pass to
Nicole Corcione. The senior quickly took the ball and fired a shot past Webster to make it 2-0.
Â
CSU kept Webster busy for the rest of the half as the goalkeeper had to make three more saves to keep it at 2-0.
Â
The second half action started early for the Lady Cougars as CSU earned two corner kicks. On the second,
Mandy Janowitz lined up for the kick and played a good ball into the box.
Brooke Nail was in the right place as the sophomore scored the first goal of her career to put the Lady Cougars up 3-0.
Â
The Lady Cougars finished the match outshooting the Lions 16-8, including 7-3 in shots on goal.
Maylyn Parsons made three saves in over 75 minutes of action.
Paige Betsill wrapped up the clean sheet playing the final 14-plus minutes.
Â
Columbus State will be back in action on Sunday taking on Wingate in the final match of the CSU Collegiate Invitational at 4 p.m. Wingate played Lee to a scoreless draw earlier on Friday.
