JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Columbus State University men's basketball team dropped a 99-69 decision at Carson-Newman on Sunday. The nonconference game was played in Jefferson City, Tenn.

Rudy Winters led Columbus State (0-3) with 16 points. JaCori Payne and Michael Graham added 12 apiece.

"I liked the way we fought over the first 10 minutes, but we were not good enough today," head coach Robert Moore said. "We have some things that we need to fix right away with Lander coming up on Saturday."

The two sides battled to a 20-all stalemate over the first 10 minutes of the contest, as the Cougars started 5-for-10 from the outside. Payne hit a pair, as did John Lambert.

Winters connected from downtown with 5:25 remaining in the first half to bring the Cougars within one at 24-23, but it would be all Carson-Newman (6-0) the rest of the way.

The Eagles put together a 21-5 run over the final five minutes to close out the first half up 45-28.

C-N would continue to add onto the lead over the final 20 minutes, leading by as much as 33 points down the stretch.

CSU shot just 36.2 percent (25-for-69) from the field on the day and a shade better (36.4 percent) from the 3-point line.

Columbus State starts Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. tip against Lander inside the Lumpkin Center.
