PEMBROKE, N.C. – Behind its best shooting performance in more than 15 years, the Columbus State University women's basketball team defeated UNC Pembroke 99-79 on Sunday. The Peach Belt Conference game was played in Pembroke, N.C.
Â
Columbus State (4-2, 2-0) made 15-of-25 3-point attempts on the afternoon to pace its top scoring output of the season. The 15 makes from outside were just two shy of the PBC record of 17.
Â
The Lady Cougars were led by 25 points from
Tatiana Wayne, along with 24 from
Machala Raymonville and 20 from
Tatum Jarvis. The trio combined for 14 of the 15 made 3-pointers.
Â
"You can't say enough about the play of our three guards," head coach
Anita Howard said. "We're very difficult to guard when everyone is making shots and you saw that today."
Â
CSU's offensive explosion started in the biggest of ways, as Wayne got the Lady Cougars on the scoreboard with a four-point play. The junior drilled a 3 from the right wing and sank the free throw after being crashed into.
Â
UNC Pembroke (2-4, 0-2) actually controlled the first five minutes of the game however, knocking down 3-pointers of its own to open up an 18-8 lead.
Â
Wayne and Raymonville then alternated 3-pointers on four consecutive possessions to turn a 10-point deficit into a two-point advantage. The first quarter ended even at 25 and Raymonville hit another 3-pointer on CSU's first shot of the second to give the Lady Cougars a lead they would never relinquish.
Â
Leading by five to start the third, CSU scored the first 10 points after the break capped off by the first of four 3-pointers from Jarvis in the second half. An 18-4 run to close the quarter then stretched the margin out to 22 and the Lady Cougars would cruise home from there.
Â
It was a strong shooting day all around as CSU shot 51.6 percent (32-for-62) from the floor and made 20-of-26 at the free throw line. The Lady Cougars also outrebounded the Braves 49-28.
Â
Columbus State will now travel to Francis Marion Tuesday for its final contest before the holiday break. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Florence, S.C.
