COLUMBUS – For the first time in nearly two years, the Columbus State University women's basketball team dropped a game on its home floor, falling 78-69 to North Georgia on Wednesday night. The Peach Belt Conference contest was played in the Lumpkin Center.
Â
The loss snaps a 20-game home winning streak for the Lady Cougars and was the first regular season home loss since February of 2014, a stretch covering 42 games.
Â
"We were not good in the fourth quarter tonight," head coach
Anita Howard said. "You can't expect to win games when you play bad on both ends of the court, and that's what we did tonight."
Â
Columbus State (5-4, 3-2 PBC) carried a 57-52 lead into the fourth quarter and scored the opening three points to lead 60-52 with nine minutes remaining.
Â
North Georgia (9-2, 4-1) then came charging back, scoring the next nine points to take its first lead since 2-0.
Tatiana Wayne quickly answered with a 3-pointer to seesaw the Lady Cougars ahead, but a long ball on the other end took the lead right back.
Â
With the game tied at 64, UNG buried back-to-back 3s to open up a six-point advantage.
Tatum Jarvis cut the deficit in half with a three-point play, but CSU would get no closer as the Nighthawks pulled away down the stretch.
Â
Wayne led all scorers with 31 points on the night, her second 30-point effort of the season.
Machala Raymonville added 15, while
Tatum Jarvis pitched in 10 of her own.
Jasmine Herndon finished with 13 rebounds and six blocks, both season highs.
Â
CSU shot just 31.1 percent (23-for-74) from the field, knocking down 7-of-17 3-point attempts. The Lady Cougars cleaned up the glass, outrebounding UNG 54-40 with 23 offensive rebounds.
Â
Columbus State will be on the road for the next two games, starting with Saturday at Augusta. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
