COLUMBUS – A new journey begins Friday for the Columbus State University women's basketball team, as the Lady Cougars open up the 2018-19 campaign.
Columbus State begins the season with the PBC-SIAC Challenge with games against Fort Valley State and Albany State. Friday's game against FVSU is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Albany, Ga.
Head coach Anita Howard starts her third season at the helm of the Lady Cougar program. Through two seasons, Howard owns a 50-12 overall record at CSU.
The Lady Cougars return seven players off the 2017-18 team that went 19-10, led by reigning Peach Belt Conference and Southeast Region Player of the Year Tatiana Wayne. Wayne averaged 20.0 points per game last season and enters 2018-19 needing just 187 points to reach 1,000 for her career.
Chrisalyn Boston, Kaihla Carter, Tatum Jarvis and Eboni Williams all return as well after playing significant minutes last year. Howard added 10 newcomers to the fold for 2018-19.
Columbus State is 11-3 in the seven seasons of the PBC-SIAC Challenge. The Lady Cougars split last season, defeating Fort Valley State 95-54 before falling 71-68 to Albany State.
CSU is 9-6 all-time against FVSU, while holding a 15-8 edge in the series with Albany State.
Fort Valley State and Albany State are both 0-3 to start the season. The pair lost to Valdosta State and West Florida on the opening weekend. FVSU also lost to West Alabama on Tuesday, while the Lady Rams lost to West Georgia on Monday.
