CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The postseason run came to an end Sunday for the third-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team, as the Lady Cougars dropped a 1-0 match at Lee in the national quarterfinals.
Â
Columbus State ends the 2018 season with an 18-1-2 overall record after sweeping the Peach Belt Conference regular season and tournament titles and winning their fourth Southeast Region championship in five years.
Â
"The difference today was efficiency," head coach
Jay Entlich said. "Lee finished one of the better chances it got and we were unable to finish ours. Give them a lot of credit because they stuck to their gameplan and were able to keep us out of the net."
Â
As has been the case for the entire season, Columbus State controlled possession for the majority of the match.
Â
Over the first 45 minutes, the Lady Cougars took eight corners and had four shots, while Lee had just one shot that made it through to
Bria Riancho in goal.
Â
The second half saw much of the same.
Riley Clark got a look less than two minutes into the half that missed just wide of the mark and
Amanda Murphy lifted one over the crossbar five minutes later.
Â
Lee (17-6-1) finally broke through in the 63
rd minute, heading home a cross from the right side to take the first lead.
Â
From that point on, it became an onslaught of chances for the Lady Cougars. CSU was awarded a penalty kick in the 68
th minute after a handball in the box, however the Lee keeper made the save and kept the match at 1-0.
Â
Brooke Nail had a header in the 70
th minute that required a diving save, while
Tehgan Anguilm bounced a shot off the left post four minutes later. Nail then hit the crossbar with a header in the 76
th minute as CSU kept pounding away.
Â
Ultimately, it was to no avail for the Lady Cougars, as Lee finished off the shutout and ended Columbus State's season. CSU outshot the Flames 16-11 on the day and had 17 corner kicks to just two for Lee.
