COLUMBUS – The Columbus State University men's basketball team came away victorious against Albany State, with a 79-76 overtime win Thursday night.
Two juniors notched double-doubles in tonight's win with Landrius Horton putting up 29 points and 10 rebounds while Bryant Givens scored 13 points and dished out 13 assists.
"We've added a lot of length on the defensive side of the ball," head coach Robert Moore said. "I'm proud of the effort we put on the floor tonight. We got our hands on a lot of loose balls and in turn it gave us the opportunity to push the pace."
Late in the second half with game all tied up at 69, senior DeMarcus McVay hit a midrange jumper to give the Cougars the lead. After Albany State tied it with a lay-up, McVay missed a jumper at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
Columbus State (4-1) relied heavily upon their defense all game long forcing Albany State into 25 turnovers. After a 3-pointer by Horton gave the Cougars a six point advantage with under a minute to play in overtime, Columbus State held on in the final seconds as the Golden Rams missed two 3-pointers to tie.
Early in the first half, the Cougars jumped out to a 17-point lead which included a stretch of three high-flying dunks in three minutes that brought the Lumpkin Center to their feet.
The Cougars shot 44.3 percent (31-for-70) from the field and went 9-of-27 from the 3-point line.
Columbus State will head to Greenwood, S.C. Saturday, December 1 for their first conference game of the season against the Lander Bearcats. Tip off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
