COLUMBUS – The Columbus State University women's basketball team earned their second conference win in a 72-64 victory over UNC Pembroke.

Senior Tatiana Wayne lead all scorers with 19 points but it was newly inserted starter Saryna Carpenter who was a difference maker down low putting up 10 points and four rebounds. Carpenter shot 4-for-8 from the field and the double digit points were a season high for the sophomore.

"It's always good when you can put a check in the win column against a tough Peach Belt Conference opponent," head coach Anita Howard said. "I like to think we're a team that wins by committee. It was great to see Carpenter step up, it's exactly what she's been doing in practice and why she earned the start tonight."

Near the end of a tightly contested first quarter, the Lady Cougars ramped up their defensive effort. Columbus State proceeded to go on a 14-3 run which spanned past the midway point of the second quarter. But after opening up their 10-point lead the Braves fought back to tie it at the halftime break.

The Lady Cougars got a lot of help off the bench including Anna Stewart who finished with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Columbus State is the second best team in the entire nation in offensive rebounding and it proved yet again tonight as they grabbed another 20 boards on the offensive glass.

Wayne was quiet the entire game until the fourth quarter when she kept the Lady Cougars in front by scoring 13 points in the final ten minutes of action to help close out the game.

The Lady Cougars shot 38.8 percent (26-for-67) from the field and went 3-of-15 from the 3-point line.

Columbus State is back in action Wednesday morning December 19 against Francis Marion. Tipoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
