COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University women's basketball team picked up a win in their final home game of the 2018 calendar year defeating Francis Marion 78-64.

Sophomore Chrisalyn Boston had a big game finishing with a double-double putting up 12 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Tatiana Wayne led all scorers with 22 points with teammate LeeAysia Williamson finishing with 19.

"Francis Marion has a great ball club and so this turned into a fun and competitive game," head coach Anita Howard said. "The mixture of defenses that we employed worked really well for us and startled their players which helped us grow our lead down the stretch."

It took a quarter for the Lady Cougars to get rolling as Francis Marion led 21-19 after the first. But in the second quarter the defense came to life as Coach Howard employed a multitude of different defensive looks to throw the Patriots off their game. Columbus State closed the half out strong going on an 11-2 run to go into the break up 43-34.

Columbus State remained in control of the game until late in the third, when the Patriots made things interesting. With the Lady Cougars holding a 52-45 lead, Francis Marion scored seven straight to tie the game at 52. But the Lady Cougars came storming back once again and eventually went on a 7-0 run with 1:56 left in the game to grow the lead to 15.

The Lady Cougars shot 37.0 percent (30-for-81) from the field and went 3-of-18 from the 3-point line.

Columbus State starts the new calendar year heading to Aiken, S.C. January 5 for a conference game against USC Aiken. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
