COLUMBUS. - The Columbus State University women's basketball team picked up their first conference win Wednesday night defeating USC Aiken 70-56.
Senior Tatiana Wayne was one of two Lady Cougars that finished with double figures in scoring, as she led the team with 32 points on the night including eight made three-pointers. Wayne also had nine rebounds to go along with four steals. Junior Khaila Carter provided a big spark off the bench finishing with 11 points.
"We didn't quite play Lady Cougar basketball in those first three quarters," head coach Anita Howard said. "To play Lady Cougar basketball you have to have fun and play with energy and efficiency. But it was great to see it all start to click down the stretch which allowed us to go on that big run to finish the game."
Entering the fourth quarter down by seven, the Lady Cougars outscored USC Aiken 25-4 including closing the game on a 20-0 run. With the Pacers leading 56-50, Columbus State got three quick buckets to tie the game before Kristian Carter made a pair of free throws to put CSU ahead for good.
The defense continued to turn into offense with Wayne making a 3-pointer and then coming up with a steal and a layup to put the Lady Cougars up by 10. CSU made their final two shots of the game to put a bow on the victory.
Columbus State (4-1) forced 28 turnovers, the most turnovers committed this season by the Pacers. CSU limited the Pacers to just 35 percent shooting from the floor, their lowest mark this year.Â
The Lady Cougars shot 36.1 percent (26-for-72) from the field and went 10-of-25 from the 3-point line.
Columbus State will head to Pensacola, Fla. Saturday, Dec. 8 in a nonconference game against West Florida. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
