COLUMBUS – Playing on its home field for the first time in 2018, the Columbus State University baseball team picked up an 8-6 win over West Florida on Tuesday night. The nonconference game was played at Burger King Stadium at Ragsdale Field.

"They walked us a lot early and we took advantage of it with some key hits," head coach Greg Appleton said. "Our pitchers also did a good job of making some big pitchers to get out of jams."

Columbus State (4-1) jumped on the board via the long ball in the bottom of the first inning. Garrett Kirkwood took a one-out walk and was standing on second when Frank Wager belted his second home run of the season to straightaway centerfield to start the scoring.

Free passes for Grant Berry and Chase Brown set up the Cougars in the second, and Justin Evans delivered with two away. The junior lined a double down the left field line to bring both runners home and double the advantage to 4-0.

West Florida (2-4) broke through with a solo shot in the top of the third, but the Cougars kept adding on in the bottom half.

Austin Pharr doubled home Wager with a ball to the wall in left-centerfield and Brown rolled a two-run single through the drawn-in infield to make it a 7-1 game.

Clark battled through his five innings, stranding a pair of runners in the fourth and fifth frames. The junior allowed two runs on seven hits, while striking out four.

The Argos clawed back into the game with three runs in the sixth before Mason McClellan got one back with a RBI knock in the bottom half.

The Cougar bullpen took care of it from there to seal the victory. Jalen Latta allowed just one run in two innings and Drew Reeves slammed the door shut with a perfect ninth for his first save of the year.

Despite the eight runs, CSU managed just six hits on the night. The Cougars took advantage of eight walks and a pair of hit batters. Brown, Evans and Wager all drove in a pair in the win.

Columbus State will play a three-game series against Lynn starting on Friday afternoon at Burger King Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
