COLUMBUS – On the opening day of its home tournament, the Columbus State University earned a split against Wingate and Tuskegee. The games were the first of the season played at Cougar Field.

Columbus State (4-4) fell 6-0 to Wingate in the opener before a huge 15-0 win over Tuskegee to wrap up the night. Peyton Sorrells recorded a 5-inning no-hitter for the Lady Cougars in the finale.

"We didn't look like ourselves against Wingate," head coach Brad Huskisson said. "I thought we had a good approach at the plate in the second game and it helped us put up a bunch of runs early."

CSU will take on the same two opponents in day two of the tournament. The Lady Cougars will play Wingate at 1 p.m. and Tuskegee at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Game One

It was a quiet offensive showing for the Lady Cougars to start Saturday as they managed just four hits.

Wingate put up five runs over the first three innings to provide all the offense it would need.

CSU put a pair of runners in scoring position in the second and loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth, but failed to score on both occasions. The Lady Cougars then went down in order over the final three frames.

Calli Star had two of the four knocks for the Lady Cougars.

Game Two

Game two belonged to Sorrells and the Lady Cougar offense. The right-hander allowed just three baserunners on the night and needed just 55 pitches to record the 20th no-hitter in program history and the second of her career.

After the shutout in game one, the Lady Cougars poured it on early in the nightcap. CSU put a 13-spot on the board in the first inning and never looked back.

Elizabeth Perdue singled home the first two runs and Star added two more with a hit of her own. Tuskegee then helped the Lady Cougars out, allowing five more runs to cross the plate without a hit.

Star added three more RBIs in the first inning with a bases clearing double and JoJo Beyer finished off the frame with a RBI double of her own.

CSU was quiet over the next two innings until Keeli Waugh hit her first homer of the season in the fourth. Star then capped off a good showing at the plate with a sacrifice fly.

Star was 3-for-3 in the game with six RBIs. Twelve of the 13 Lady Cougars that stepped to the plate reached base in the win.
