COLUMBUS – The outdoor season began on Saturday for the Columbus State University men's and women's track & field teams, as both competed at the Cougar Invitational. The meet was held at Brookstone School.
 
The CSU men took the top team spot on Saturday, finishing with 230 team points. The Cougars were 100 points ahead of Morehouse in second place.
 
The Lady Cougars came in third with 91 points. West Georgia held the top position in the women's meet.
 
The Cougars finished in the top spot on 10 events on Saturday, excelling on the track as well as in the field events.
 
Xavier Matthews picked up where he left off last year with victories in the 100 and 200 meters. He also teamed with Javian Williams, Mitchell Morand and D'Andre Hall for the win in the 4x100 relay.
 
Nate Blackmon had a strong showing as well, winning the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Blackmon set a new CSU record in the triple jump at 14.90 meters.
 
The Cougars also did well in the distance events with Noah Hollis winning the 3,000 meters and Christopher Oswald taking the 10,000 meters.
 
In the field, William Chandler won the javelin and Peter Bennett was victorious in the pole vault.
 
The Lady Cougars picked up a pair of victories with Jastonie Hill taking the top spot in the 800 meters and Alli Hay winning in the 1,500 meters.
 
The weekend track meets continue on Sunday for both teams with the Adonica Ferguson Relays. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Brookstone.
