Lady Cougars Open Season With Sweep

COLUMBUS – The third-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team turned in a 9-0 victory over Georgia Southwestern in Thursday's season opener. The match was played at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
 
Columbus State (1-0) didn't lose a game in the two doubles matches that were played. Beatriz Lopez and Giorgia Vitale dominated their opponent at the top spot, with Noa Davico and Rachael Williams doing the same at second doubles.
 
Georgia Southwestern (1-3) did not fill the third doubles slot, giving the Lady Cougars the default victory.
 
It was much of the same in singles play, with third-ranked Lopez taking her opening match 6-1, 6-0. Davico didn't drop a game in the second spot, as was the same for 14th-ranked Candice Paya and Marleen Tilgner playing at fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Vitale picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles.
 
Again, the Lady Cougars grabbed a default win in the sixth spot.
 
Columbus State is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 17 at home against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
