BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Columbus State University track & field teams spent Friday and Saturday competing at the Southern Invitational for their second competitions of the outdoor season. The two-day meet was hosted by Birmingham Southern.
 
The Cougars totaled 95 team points and finished in third behind Division I Alabama State and Alabama A&M. The Lady Cougars amassed 45 points and ended in seventh, third out of the Division II schools.
 
Xavier Matthews had the lone individual win for the Cougars, taking the top spot in the 100 meters in 10.67 seconds. Matthews was also the runner-up in the 200 meters and part of the 4x100 relay team that finished second.
 
The quartet of Matthews, Javian Williams, Nate Blackmon and D'Andre Hall ran 40.90 seconds in the 4x100 to post the fastest Division II time in the country this season.
 
Nate Blackmon had another strong showing in the long jump and triple jump. The sophomore finished second in the triple jump and third in the long jump, while Williams took third and sixth in the two events, respectively.
 
Charles Asouzu and Noah Churchwell tallied a pair of point-scoring finishes, doing so in the 800 and 1,500 meters.
 
Alli Hay had the top Lady Cougar finish in any event, finishing second in the 5,000 meters. Jastonie Hill also had a second-place finish in the 800 meters before placing in the 1,500 meters.
 
Hill combined with Semia Houston, Morgan Evans and Na'ilah Allen to take third in the 4x400 relay.
 
Columbus State will travel to Atlanta next weekend for the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech.
