MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Columbus State University softball team lost two games on Tuesday at Florida Tech. The nonconference doubleheader was played in Melbourne, Fla.

Columbus State (15-12) gave up a late run and fell 1-0 in game one before taking a 2-0 loss in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Lady Cougars will be at Embry-Riddle on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Game One

On a day dominated by pitching, the opener was scoreless through the first five innings.

Florida Tech threatened to break through in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on second and two outs. The Panthers sent a single to centerfield, giving the runner a chance to score. However, Kia Smith sent a perfect throw to the plate to keep the run off the board and the game scoreless.

A windy day then got the best of the Lady Cougars in the sixth. With two down, a wind-blown fly ball landed just inside the right field line for a double and the following batter lofted a pop up between the cirlce and the plate that drifted away from the charging defense and trickled away to allow the eventually winning run to score.

The Lady Cougars loaded the bases with one out in the seventh needing a run to tie the game. Kristin Studds hit a fly to left that was caught and Elizabeth Perdue was thrown out at the plate to end the game.

Darby Demarest (8-6) was the tough-luck loser with just one run allowed over six innings in the circle. The junior struck out six.

Game Two

Tuesday's second game featured more strong pitching, as the two teams combined for just four hits.

The Panthers grabbed a run in the first without the benefit of a base hit, and later added a run on a two-out single in the third.

CSU had three hits in the ballgame, but was unable to get a runner into scoring position.

Helen Snavely (0-2) worked all six innings for the Lady Cougars, giving up just one hit and a pair of unearned runs.
