MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The fourth-ranked Columbus State University baseball team hung on for a 12-11 victory against Tuskegee on Wednesday evening. The nonconference game was played at Paterson Field in Montgomery, Ala.

Columbus State (22-2) extended its winning streak to 16 games and tallied double-digit runs for the eighth time this season.

"This obviously was a lot closer than we wanted," head coach Greg Appleton said. "We scored a bunch in the first inning and took our foot off the gas and then had our hands full the rest of the way."

It appeared as if it was going to be an easy day for the Cougars after the top of the first inning.

Robert Brooks doubled to right-centerfield with the bases loaded to plate the first two runs of the day. Austin Pharr extended the lead to 5-0 with a RBI single and Garrett Kirkwood capped off the eight-run first with a run-scoring knock of his own.

However, Tuskegee (5-16) didn't roll over. The Golden Tigers got two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the third to pull within three.

Drew Webb stopped the run momentarily with a RBI in the fifth, but Tuskegee responded with two of its own in the bottom half and cut CSU's lead to 9-7.

The Cougars found some insurance in the sixth as Pharr singled home two more as part of a three-run inning.

Columbus State took a 12-8 lead into the ninth inning, however Tuskegee launched a three-run home run with one out to make it just a one-run game. A walk put the tying run on base, but Justin Evans moved to the mound and quickly got the final two outs to keep the winning streak intact.

Kirkwood was 3-for-6 on the day to lead the Cougars. Pharr was 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Brooks went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair.

Tyler Cadenhead (5-0) stayed perfect on the mound with five innings of work. The sophomore allowed seven runs, but only two were earned. Evans tallied his second save of the season.

Columbus State heads on the road this weekend to take on USC Aiken. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 6 p.m.
