MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The fourth-ranked Columbus State University baseball team hung on for a 12-11 victory against Tuskegee on Wednesday evening. The nonconference game was played at Paterson Field in Montgomery, Ala.
Â
Columbus State (22-2) extended its winning streak to 16 games and tallied double-digit runs for the eighth time this season.
Â
"This obviously was a lot closer than we wanted," head coach
Greg Appleton said. "We scored a bunch in the first inning and took our foot off the gas and then had our hands full the rest of the way."
Â
It appeared as if it was going to be an easy day for the Cougars after the top of the first inning.
Â
Robert Brooks doubled to right-centerfield with the bases loaded to plate the first two runs of the day.
Austin Pharr extended the lead to 5-0 with a RBI single and
Garrett Kirkwood capped off the eight-run first with a run-scoring knock of his own.
Â
However, Tuskegee (5-16) didn't roll over. The Golden Tigers got two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the third to pull within three.
Â
Drew Webb stopped the run momentarily with a RBI in the fifth, but Tuskegee responded with two of its own in the bottom half and cut CSU's lead to 9-7.
Â
The Cougars found some insurance in the sixth as Pharr singled home two more as part of a three-run inning.
Â
Columbus State took a 12-8 lead into the ninth inning, however Tuskegee launched a three-run home run with one out to make it just a one-run game. A walk put the tying run on base, but
Justin Evans moved to the mound and quickly got the final two outs to keep the winning streak intact.
Â
Kirkwood was 3-for-6 on the day to lead the Cougars. Pharr was 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Brooks went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair.
Â
Tyler Cadenhead (5-0) stayed perfect on the mound with five innings of work. The sophomore allowed seven runs, but only two were earned. Evans tallied his second save of the season.
Â
Columbus State heads on the road this weekend to take on USC Aiken. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 6 p.m.
