COLUMBUS – The Columbus State University softball team turned in its third consecutive sweep, taking a pair from Middle Georgia on Wednesday. The nonconference doubleheader was played at Cougar Field.
Columbus State (21-14) has now won six straight games, its longest winning streak since winning seven in a row in February of 2016.
"It was another good night with two more wins," head coach
Brad Huskisson said. "We're trying to continue to build confidence and momentum heading into the weekend and I thought we did that tonight."
The Lady Cougars head on the road this weekend for a doubleheader at Flagler on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in St. Augustine, Fla.
Game One
The day got off to a strong start for the Lady Cougars, as CSU plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
A wild throw allowed
Kia Smith to score the opening run of the game and
Elizabeth Perdue laced a single into the outfield to bring
McKenzie Fagioli home. A wild pitch pushed Perdue across the plate later in the inning to make it 3-0.
Perdue was at it again in the second, singling with the bases loaded to score
Lee Anne Rees and stretch the lead out to four.
Middle Georgia knotted the game up at four apiece in the top of the third, but the game wouldn't stay tied for long.
Rees gave the Lady Cougars the lead right back with a two-run single in the bottom of the third, and
JoJo Beyer added a two-run knock of her own in the fourth.
Columbus State padded the lead in the sixth with Perdue launching her seventh home run of the year to start the inning and
Kristin Studds and
Keeli Waugh adding RBI singles.
Perdue and Rees were each 3-for-4 to lead the 15-hit attack from the Lady Cougars. Fagioli and Smith also had two-hits apiece.
Peyton Sorrells (9-3) won her third straight game, working 4.2 scoreless innings in relief of
Darby Demarest.
Game Two
The nightcap required a late CSU comeback, as the Lady Cougars trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Waugh hit a one-out solo home run to tie the game up at two, part of a huge second game for the senior.
In the sixth,
Maddie Dodson delivered the big hit with the freshman doubling home
Kirstin Reynolds to push the Lady Cougars back in front. Three more runs came across in the inning, including a RBI triple from Waugh.
Waugh was 4-for-4 in the game, hitting for the cycle. The senior drove in two and scored twice. Smith and Studds also had two hits.
Helen Snavely (1-2) earned her first victory of the season with three innings of relief work.
Harley Dawson started in the circle in game two, allowing just one run on three hits.
