COLUMBUS – The 11th-ranked Columbus State University baseball team tallied a second straight win over No. 21 Flagler, downing the Saints 10-4 on Friday evening. The Peach Belt Conference game was played at Burger King Stadium at Ragsdale Field.

Columbus State (26-5, 10-3 PBC) pounded out 14 more hits on Friday night on its way to its fourth victory of the week.

"We swung the bats well again today," head coach Greg Appleton said. "The wind was blowing in, but we were still able to get three balls out of the park and we had another good approach at the plate."

It was Flagler that struck first on Friday, plating a run in the top of the second inning. However, the Cougars caught a runner at the plate to end the inning and their bats came to life from there.

Grant Berry started a two-out rally for CSU in the bottom half of the inning, singling to left-centerfield and swiping second base. Austin Pharr then rolled a ball back through the middle to tie the game at one all.

Flagler (24-10, 14-6) had a chance to end the inning there, but a throwing error allowed Chase Brown to reach to keep the inning alive. Drew Webb made the error hurt, dumping a single into right field to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.

The game stayed 2-1 until the sixth inning, as both pitchers settled in. In the sixth, Robert Brooks worked a one-out walk and Berry went the other way for his sixth home run of the season.

The long ball came back around in the seventh, with Mason McClellan crushing his sixth homer of the year with a man on to make it 6-1. Two batters later, Brooks launched a solo shot down the left field line to add another run.

The Saints cut the deficit in half with three in the top of the eighth, but the Cougars quelled any hopes of a comeback with three more runs of their own. Garrett Kirkwood plated a run on a sacrifice fly and two more scored on McClellan's single.

Perez Knowles (3-1) tossed eight innings for the Cougars, allowing four runs and striking out seven. Justin Evans tossed a scoreless ninth for the second straight day.

Six different Cougars picked up a pair of hits in the ballgame, with McClellan driving in three and Berry adding two RBIs.

Columbus State and Flagler will wrap up the series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
