COLUMBUS – The Columbus State University baseball team ran its winning streak to nine straight with a 7-0 victory over Auburn Montgomery on Wednesday. The nonconference contest was played at Burger King Stadium at Ragsdale Field.
Â
Tyler Cadenhead (3-0) was sharp on the mound for the Cougars, tossing seven scoreless frames for his third win of the year. The right-hander allowed just two hits and struck out nine.
Â
"Tyler threw the ball really well tonight," head coach
Greg Appleton said. "All three of our pitchers worked ahead in the count and had a lot of success."
Â
After a quick first inning, the Cougars used the long ball to get on the board first.
Grant Berry launched his fourth home run of the season into the netting in right to give CSU the early lead.
Â
In the third,
Garrett Kirkwood started a two-out rally for the Cougars with a single to left.
Mason McClellan was then hit by a pitch and
Frank Wager delivered an RBI single to double the advantage.
Robert Brooks followed with a run-scoring single of his own to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Â
Columbus State (15-2) tacked on two more runs in the fifth on singles by Berry and
Austin Pharr before capping the scoring with two more in the sixth. McClellan brought home
Justin Evans with a sacrifice fly and Wager picked up another RBI knock.
Â
The Cougar pitching staff took care of the rest with Cadenhead's seven shutout innings followed by scoreless innings from
Payton Phillips and
Jalen Latta.
Â
Eight of nine Cougar starters picked up a hit on the afternoon, led by a 3-for-5 day from Wager. Berry, Kirkwood and Pharr had two hits apiece.
Â
Columbus State will return to Peach Belt Conference action on Friday night with the start of a three-game series against UNC Pembroke. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Burger King Stadium.
