COLUMBUS – The Columbus State University softball team turned in a doubleheader split against Young Harris on Saturday. The Peach Belt Conference games were played at Cougar Field.

Columbus State (27-16, 10-4 PBC) won the opener 7-0 before Young Harris picked up a 17-4 victory in game two.

"It was a tale of two games today," head coach Brad Huskisson said. "We played really well in the first game and then just couldn't get anybody out in game two. We'll take the positives out of the day and now get ready for a long trip to UNC Pembroke."

The Lady Cougars will play at UNC Pembroke on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Game One

Saturday's opener was a one-sided affair, as the Lady Cougars scored in the opening inning and never looked back.

Elizabeth Perdue singled into right field to score Keeli Waugh in the bottom of the first and that would prove to be all the offense Darby Demarest would need.

Demarest (12-8) was in control in the circle, allowing just two hits in the complete-game shutout. The junior struck out nine in the win.

Kirstin Reynolds gave the Lady Cougars a little cushion in the fourth with her seventh home run of the season. CSU then plated five more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, including a pair of RBI singles from Kristin Studds.

Reynolds, Studds and Rees all had two-hit days for the Lady Cougars.

Game Two

The second game got off to an ominous start with Young Harris putting up 12 runs in the top of the first inning. The Mountain Lions then got five more in the third and rolled to the five-inning win.

Perdue drove in three of the four CSU runs in the game, hitting a two-run double in the third and a solo home run in the fifth.
