PEMBROKE, N.C. – It was a record-setting day for the Columbus State University softball team, as the Lady Cougars swept a doubleheader against UNC Pembroke on Monday. The Peach Belt Conference games were played in Pembroke, N.C.
Â
Columbus State (29-16, 12-4 PBC) racked up an 18-1 victory in game one and backed it up with even more offense, winning the second half of the doubleheader 26-8 in just five innings.
Â
"It's hard to describe that kind of day offensively," head coach
Brad Huskisson said. "We had a lot of frustration built up after Saturday's loss and we took it all out at the plate today."
Â
Columbus State is at home on Saturday to take on Francis Marion. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Â
Game One
Â
Monday's opening game was all about the long ball for the Lady Cougars, who launched five of them.
Â
Keeli Waugh got the fun started on her record day, sending a grand slam over the centerfield wall to open the scoring in the second inning.
Â
Elizabeth Perdue hit her 10
th home run of the season in the fifth inning, and
Kirstin Reynolds added a solo shot two batters later.
Mary Horne got in on the action with a two run-shot in the sixth, marking the first home run of her career.
Â
Things escalated offensively for the Lady Cougars in the game's final inning, as CSU put 10 runs on the board.
Calli Star had a pair of run-scoring hits in the frame, along with a three-run double from
Kristin Studds.
Â
However, the biggest story of the inning was a second grand slam of the game from
Keeli Waugh. The senior became the first player in PBC history to hit two grand slams in a single game, while tying the league's record for most RBIs in a conference game with eight. The eight RBIs also tied the single-game CSU record done three times previously and most recently by Brittany Leverett in 2008.
Â
Columbus State had 15 hits in the game, led by Waugh's 3-for-5 game. All nine starters had at least one.
Â
Darby Demarest (13-8) was the beneficiary of the offense, allowing just one run in a complete-game effort.
Â
Game Two
Â
While game one featured a lot of offense, the Lady Cougars managed to top the performance in game two.
Â
Waugh continued her absurd day at the plate with a leadoff home run to start game two, setting the tone for the game. CSU added a pair of runs later in the inning on hits from
McKenzie Fagioli and
Kristin Studds.
Â
In the second, Columbus State sent 14 hitters to the plate, getting seven hits, four walks and eight more runs.
Kia Smith, Perdue, Star,
Lee Anne Rees and Horne all had run-scoring singles in the inning.
Â
The offense then one-upped itself with a nine-spot in the third. Fourteen more batters came to the plate with six hits, three walks and two players hit by a pitch. Waugh and Smith had back-to-back two-run doubles.
Â
Leading 20-5, Waugh launched her fourth home run of the day to lead off a four-run fourth inning.
Â
The Lady Cougars totaled 26 hits in the game, breaking the PBC record for most hits in a conference game, previously held by Kennesaw State with 25, and the CSU single-game record.
Â
Waugh and Star each went 4-for-4 in the second game with five and four RBIs, respectively. Eight of nine CSU starters had multiple hits in the game, while Studds tied the PBC record and set a new Lady Cougar record with four walks.
