COLUMBUS – It was a banner day for the Columbus State University softball program, as the Lady Cougars celebrated Senior Day with a sweep of Francis Marion. The Peach Belt Conference doubleheader was played at Cougar Field.
Columbus State (31-16, 14-4 PBC) won the opening game 10-4 and followed it with a 7-1 win in game two. In the process,
Brad Huskisson notched wins 319 and 320 of his CSU career, moving him to the top of the all-time wins list.
"I thought we had a patient approach at the plate today," head coach
Brad Huskisson said. "We were able to wear down their pitchers and took advantage when they got tired."
The Lady Cougars will wrap up the home schedule with two games against Albany State next Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Game One
CSU jumped on the board first with a RBI single from
Elizabeth Perdue in the first inning, but it was Francis Marion that held the lead heading into the fifth. The Patriots picked up a run in the third to tie it and added two more in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
The Lady Cougars knotted the game up at three with one swing, as
Lee Anne Rees celebrated Senior Day with her first long ball of the year.
Later in the inning, Perdue broke the tie with another run-scoring single, and
Calli Star tacked on two more with a laser into the gap for a double.
Kirstin Reynolds capped the six-run inning with a double of her own.
CSU then used the home run to get more insurance in the sixth, getting homers from
JoJo Beyer and
Keeli Waugh. The blast was the fifth in a three-game span Waugh.
Darby Demarest (14-8) gave up four runs in six innings of work for the victory.
Helen Snavely worked a scoreless seventh to finish it off.
Waugh, Perdue, Rees and
Kia Smith had two hits apiece for the Lady Cougars.
Game Two
Saturday's nightcap was all about the home run ball for Columbus State, as the Lady Cougars plated all seven runs courtesy of the long ball.
Beyer hit her second of the doubleheader in the second inning to plate the first two runs, and Perdue launched a two-run shot of her own in the third to double the advantage to 4-0.
FMU plated its only run of the game in the fifth, but Star topped it with a three-run shot in the bottom half of the inning to put it away.
Peyton Sorrells (12-4) went the distance in the circle, surrendering just one run on four hits in the complete-game effort.
