MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The seventh-ranked Columbus State University baseball team made easy work of Auburn Montgomery for a 16-1 victory on Wednesday night. The nonconference game was played in Montgomery, Ala.

Columbus State (33-7) needed just seven innings to pick up the win, pounding out 18 hits for its 11th straight game with double digit hits.

"It was good to see us take care of business," head coach Greg Appleton said. "AUM has taken down some good teams this season, so it was good to see us get a bunch of runs early to put it away."

The runs came early and often for the Cougars on Wednesday night. Justin Evans singled and stole second to start the game. Garrett Kirkwood sacrificed him to third and Evans scored on a groundball by Mason McClellan.

Auburn Montgomery (17-26) tied the game up in the bottom of the first, but the Cougar defense cut down a pair of chances to add more runs. Robert Brooks threw out a runner at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch, and Austin Pharr threw out a runner trying to score from second on a single to end the inning.

From there, the floodgates began to open for the Cougars. Kirkwood singled home Pharr to give CSU the lead back in the second, and Chase Brown doubled in a pair in the third to make it a 4-1 game.

Kirkwood kept his good day going with a solo home run to start the fourth, his fourth of the season. Two batters later, Frank Wager hit a towering two-run shot for his team-leading 14th of the year.

Drew Webb singled home a run later in the inning, with Evans drawing a bases loaded walk and McClellan singling in two more to cap the seven-run inning.

The Cougars added on four more in the sixth behind another RBI from Kirkwood and a three-run blast from McClellan.

T.J. Clark (6-3) allowed just one run in five innings to tally the victory. Russell Forthofer went two scoreless innings to finish the win.

All nine Cougar starters had at least one hit in the game, with eight picking up two or more.

Columbus State is at Young Harris this weekend as it jumps back into Peach Belt Conference play. First pitch Friday night is scheduled for 6 p.m.
