COLUMBUS – Kicking off the NCAA Tournament, the third-ranked and top-seeded Columbus State University men's tennis team downed eighth-seeded and No. 48 Chowan 5-0 on Monday. The NCAA first round match was played at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
 
Columbus State (23-3) will now take on the winner of fourth-seeded USC Aiken and fifth-seeded Wingate in Tuesday's second round. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
 
"Chowan provided a nice test for us today," head coach Evan Isaacs said. "It was good to get this one under our belt and now we will get some rest and get ready for a big match tomorrow."
 
KP Pannu and Matei Avram dominated second doubles 8-2 to put the first point of the day on the board for the Cougars. CSU then pulled off a doubles sweep with 8-5 wins at the other positions finishing just moments apart.
 
Alvaro Regalado and Zach Whaanga tacked the opening doubles match, while Jorge Vargas and Arnold Kokulewski wrapped up third.
 
In singles action, the Cougars took the opening set in five of the six matches. Avram was the first to close out his match, winning 6-4, 6-1 at number five. Paul Sprengelmeijer then finished off the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at fourth singles.
 
Pannu, Regalado and Vargas were all up when the match was called.
